Saw Palmetto, otherwise referred to as Serenoa repens or sabal is a very common plant native to North America. Saw Palmetto has been valued since time immemorial not only as a food source but also because of its medicinal properties, such as its ability to function as a tonic, a sedative and to help prevent hair loss. As is with any other product today, saw palmetto is not without its share of side effects.
First things first though, it is to be mentioned that the use of Saw Palmetto to prevent hair loss and to boost hair re-growth may not be as effective when used alone. While it is a natural hair loss treatment, it has never been lauded for the stimulation of hair follicles that would provoke hair re-growth. It is no wonder many people who use Saw Palmetto to boost the growth of hair report that hair loss will stop in about 4-8 weeks of its usage, but it will not result in any new hair.
Having said that, whether you plan to use Saw Palmetto for hair loss or for whatever underlying medical conditions that you could be having, it pays to know its side effects so as to avoid its usage should you react to it, or find an alternative counteractive remedy.
Although most saw palmetto side effects are mild and could be triggered by just about any underlying medical condition, it is always important to consult your doctor to rule out any underlying condition so as to tell whether or not it is the effects of the Saw Palmetto product that you are using. Notably people will suffer from constipation, dizziness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headaches. There are also reported cases of male impotence, although these reports do not have any scientific backup.
Saw Palmetto has also been known to increase bleeding, which may be detrimental to your health if you have blood related disorders such as hemophilia. Still on point, the use of Saw Palmetto has also been reported to prevent or considerably slow down the process of blood clotting. So if you have a surgical procedure scheduled, you might want to avoid its usage until your doctor gives you a clean bill of health.
Despite the many side effects reported, most of which lack scientific or medical backing, it is important to mention that saw palmetto is a remedy that has proven very effective for various ailments. For one, it is highly recommended for people with enlarged prostate glands, can treat bladder problems, intestinal disorders, conditions like bronchitis, and more importantly prevents hair loss.
