Whether you already give your hair lots of TLC or you just run general maintenance every now and then, if you want it to remain looking gorgeous you’ll need to make sure you look after it as much as possible over the years. Just as your skin can, hair ages over time – the most obvious sign that you’re likely to notice as you grow older will be the appearance of grey hairs, but your hair may also change in thickness or it may even begin to thin. By looking after your hair you can stave off these changes and can enjoy luscious locks for longer.
If you’ve no idea of how to go about this though, never fear. Here are some of my top tips for looking after your hair:
1) Use the right shampoo and conditioner
Some shampoos and conditioners contain a lot of different chemicals that can be harmful to your hair, and though it might take a long time for this damage to appear it will nonetheless be working behind the scenes. You should make sure you’re using the right kind of shampoo and conditioner on your hair, so look for ones that are designed for your hair type. If you colour your hair, consider using hair products that can help to prolong your colour coverage.
2) Protect your hair from heat styling
You might be able to perfect your style with your hair straighteners, curling tongs and heated rollers, but all that heat will be damaging your hair. Get yourself a heat protection spray or another product that contains heat protecting qualities to put a barrier between the technology and your delicate mane.
3) Give your hair a break
At least once a week you should give your hair a styling break – the weekend would probably be best for this. Rather than styling it, just let it do what it wants to for the day. Even though your hair will probably look bad for that one day, come Monday it’ll be thanking you.
4) Get your hair coloured professionally
If you colour your hair regularly, doing it yourself could be worsening its condition. If you visit your salon to get your hair coloured every time you can guarantee that you’ll walk out with silky smooth hair that’s in great condition, as your stylist will be able to nourish it back to health.
5) Enjoy a healthy diet
Your diet will have an impact on the condition of your hair, so it’s vital that you do your best to get your five a day and that you drink lots of water. Otherwise, you could find yourself with limp, dry hair that’s impossible to manage.
6) Protect your hair
Just like your skin, your hair can be damaged by overexposure to the sun. Because of this, you should always wear a hat when out in the sun to stop it from being dried out by the sun’s rays. Of course, if you aren’t a fan of hats you could always try one of the many protective sprays to look after your hair when enjoying the summer sun.
